Higher octane means that the gasoline has more anti-knock compounds to prevent premature detonation in the chamber. It doesn't burn any 'cleaner' and isn't better for the environment or anything like that.
If your engine runs without pinging or knocking on lower octane go ahead and use it. My experience is that although the owner's manual says 87 is acceptable, once you get the engine throoughly warmed up, the Savage will knock on anything less than about 92.
